Cosmic Adventure: Recreational Hike to the Alfonso Serrano Millimetre Telescope
Discover a unique experience in the heights of Puebla, perfect for those seeking to combine adventure, learning, and a deep connection with nature.
This recreational activity includes breathtaking landscapes, mountaineering insights, and the opportunity to explore one of Mexico’s most iconic scientific sites.
Detailed Itinerary
12:00 p.m. – Meeting and Departure:
We will meet at your hotel or a designated point to depart for Tlalchichuca, Puebla—a picturesque mountain village where we will spend the night. Nestled at the foot of Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl), this location offers stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere to prepare for the adventure.
Next Day – Heading to Valle del Encuentro:
From Tlalchichuca, we will set off towards Santa Cruz Texmalaquita, the last inhabited village before reaching Valle del Encuentro, where our hike will begin.
Hiking Towards the Stars:
Our journey starts with a visit to the HAWC (High-Altitude Water Cherenkov) Gamma-Ray Observatory, a cutting-edge scientific facility dedicated to studying cosmic phenomena. From there, we will continue along the spectacular Arista del Diablo (Devil’s Ridge), a trail that offers panoramic views and exciting technical challenges.
Our final destination is the Alfonso Serrano Millimetre Telescope (LMT), located at over 4,580 metres above sea level, one of the largest telescopes of its kind in the world and a key instrument in astronomical research. Here, we will enjoy a packed lunch while taking in the moon-like landscape of the sandy plains and learning about the site’s significance in exploring the universe.
Descent:
After a well-deserved break, we will begin our return to Valle del Encuentro, where this unforgettable experience will conclude.
