A High-Altitude Adventure on Sierra Negra Volcano

Experience an unparalleled journey on Sierra Negra Volcano (Tliltépetl), Mexico’s fifth-highest peak and home to the impressive Alfonso Serrano Millimetre Telescope. This trek blends nature, science, and adventure, leading you through diverse landscapes—from farmlands to alpine zones—offering breathtaking views and unforgettable learning experiences.

What Makes This Journey Unique?

  • Exclusive Hiking Route: The trail through San Isidro Canoas Altas is an exciting and rarely travelled path, perfect for those seeking a deep connection with the mountain.

  • Science and Nature: Explore one of the world’s most advanced telescopes while discovering a high-altitude ecosystem.

  • Diverse Landscapes: From farmlands and dense forests to grasslands and volcanic terrain, each step unveils a new facet of this imposing volcano.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Heading to Tlalchichuca

  • 12:00 p.m. – Meeting: We will meet at your hotel or a designated location before departing for Tlalchichuca, Puebla, a peaceful mountain town where we will spend the night and prepare our gear for the next day.

Day 2 – Ascent to Sierra Negra Volcano

  • 4x4 Departure: At dawn, we will take off-road vehicles to San Isidro Canoas Altas, a picturesque village west of the volcano, where our adventure begins.

The Hike:
  • Farmlands and Forests: The journey starts through agricultural fields and pine forests, with fresh mountain air and unique natural scenery.

  • High-Altitude Grasslands: As we gain elevation, alpine vegetation dominates, with vast expanses of grass covering the volcano’s slopes.

  • The Great Loose Rock Slope: The most challenging section features steep volcanic rock inclines, where falling stones are common, testing our technique and endurance.

  • Summit and Millimetre Telescope: At the 4,580-metre summit, we will reach the Alfonso Serrano Millimetre Telescope, one of the world’s leading astronomical facilities. Here, we will take photos, enjoy the surroundings, and learn about the cutting-edge science conducted at this iconic site.

  • Descent to Valle del Encuentro: Our return route will take us to Valle del Encuentro, east of the volcano, where our transport will be waiting to take us back to Tlalchichuca.

  • Meal in Tlalchichuca & Return: We will replenish our energy with a delicious local meal before heading back to our starting point.
