Nature, Culture and History of Southern Mexico City.

This tour is designed to visit three key points from our various tours in the Tlalpan Borough.

We start the day at 4:30 a.m. by picking you up from your location, so you don’t have to worry about transport.

First stop: Xitle Volcano

We arrive at approximately 5:15 a.m. to prepare the ascent equipment and witness the sunrise from the summit of this beautiful location. We will walk along the entire rim of the crater, appreciating the natural surroundings (flora and fauna) while learning about the evolutionary history of the volcano and the interaction of the first inhabitants of the Anáhuac Basin (the Cuicuilcas).

Second stop: Xitle Lava Tubes

Of the approximately 75 square kilometres that were covered by Xitle’s lava flows, at least two independent lava tube systems or tunnel caves still survive today. These lava tubes or tunnel cavities were formed when the terrain's slope and the immense pressure at the lava front allowed the molten rock to overcome obstacles, advancing rapidly downhill while the upper crust of the flow cooled. This process created tunnels which, once the volcanic activity ceased, emptied out, leaving behind enormous cavities, some extending over 300 metres, with galleries where the ceilings exceed ten metres in height.

We will enter one of these tunnel systems to gain a deeper understanding of their formation and the extent of the devastation they caused, as well as to experience the unique sensation of being underground.

Third stop: Breakfast near Xitle Volcano (not included in the price)

Fourth stop: Cuicuilco Pyramid Base

The lava expelled by Xitle between 245 and 315 AD spread southward, covering most of the core of the Cuicuilco settlement, leaving only the upper part of the Great Pyramid Base exposed. Over 1,500 years, the top of the base was covered by sediment and organic matter, blending into the landscape as a natural hill, which by at least the 18th century was known as Cerro Cinquicuilco.
