CACAXTLA
Cacaxtla was a powerful political, military, and economic city that developed in the present-day regions of Tlaxcala and Puebla. It boasts some of the most extraordinary and best-preserved murals in Mesoamerica.
Xochitécatl left as a legacy the unique Pyramid of Flowers and amazing female clay figurines.
In the 16th century, the chronicler Muñoz Camargo described the Valley of Tlaxcala for the first time, which is why it is considered the oldest reference to Cacaxtla-Xochitécatl.
For 400 years the Cacaxtla-Xochitécatl area was uninhabited due to the activity of the Popocatépetl volcano, which altered the ecosystem of the Puebla-Tlaxcala valley.
Thanks to the murals in this area, the existence of astronomical symbols, legitimizing discourses, trade contacts, religious traditions, regional hegemony, lake exploitation, and fertility has been determined.
