CANTONA
and Tehuacán
This ancient metropolis is located on a badlands (a lava field with a rugged and arid surface), but its population adapted it into housing units surrounded by peripheral walls. We know of at least 2,700 in the southern part, the most studied, and it is estimated that at its peak, it had around 7,500 housing units where just over 90,000 people resided. The presence of 27 or more ball courts gave it unusual importance. It reached its greatest cultural peak between 350 BC and 550 AD. After 600 AD, its population grew significantly, and during that time, until 900 AD, it was the largest and most important city in the Central Highlands.

Day 1
A private tour will pick you up at your location at 6 a.m. on the way to Canto Camp, a pleasant country-style retreat where we'll have breakfast and spend the night. (Transfer time: 4 hours)
This dazzling fortified pre-Hispanic city controlled the trade route between the Altiplano and the Gulf of Mexico. Everything about it inspires admiration: the acropolis, plazas, neighborhoods, approximately 4,000 interconnected streets, and numerous ball courts. Its skilled artisans worked obsidian.
Hiking excursion to the archaeological site of Cantona (2,600 meters above sea level), a 3-kilometer walk through an ocean of lava, exploring its causeways and temples, and visiting the on-site museum. The tour lasts approximately 4 hours. Elevation difference is 112 meters.
In the afternoon, we return to the hotel to rest and have a late lunch. We'll offer you a bottle of fine Mezcal to enjoy in the garden overlooking Tezontepec Hill.
Day 2
Sunrise hike on Tezontepec Hill, covering 7 km and taking approximately 4 hours. Ideal for beginner hikers.
We returned to the hotel for breakfast and headed out to two volcanoes, first to the Alchichica Lagoon, and then a few kilometers away to another, called the Aljojuca Lagoon. This basin-like lagoon is unique in its beauty, unlike anything known in the volcanic landscape. We continued our journey to Tehuacán el Viejo. This region was fundamental to the domestication of various plants, including corn. The site of Tehuacán was considered the most important religious center and political center in the region during the Postclassic period.
Finishing we go to the city of Tehuacán to eat in the historic center, we take some time to walk around the center and return to Mexico City
